Kolkata doctor rape and murder: "Hang me if you want," said accused Sanjay Roy to investigating officers with no remorse

KOLKATA: In the rape and murder case of PG doctor in Bengal, the accused Sanjay Roy reportedly told the investigating officers, "Hang me if you want". Sanjay Roy confessed to the crime when the police started questioning him. Local media also reported that he did not show any remorse.
A 31-year-old PG doctor of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata was brutally raped and killed last Friday. It is reported that the accused Sanjay Roy used to visit the hospital campus regularly even though he was not an employee. The accused was working as a civil volunteer in the Kolkata Police. Civic volunteers are contract workers who are recruited to assist the police in a variety of tasks, including traffic control and disaster relief. They get a salary of around Rs 12,000 per month and do not get the benefits that regular police officers get.

According to reports, Roy joined Kolkata Police's Disaster Management Group as a volunteer in 2019. Later, he shifted to the police welfare cell. Then he shifted to the police outpost of RG Kar Medical College Hospital. He was doing the work of charging patients money to get admitted to the hospital. He also used to charge relatives of patients to find beds in nearby nursing homes if they did not get a bed in the government hospital.

Although not a police officer, the accused used his connections to stay in the police barracks at times. He mostly wore a t-shirt with KP (Kolkata Police) written on it. His bike also had a 'KP' tag. According to reports, he used to introduce himself as a Kolkata Police officer.

The body was found half-naked inside the seminar hall of the college on Friday morning. After the postmortem report revelated that the doctor was brutally raped, there was a huge protest. After this, the accused, who is a civic volunteer of the police, was arrested.

The principal of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata has resigned over the incident. Principal Dr Sandeep Ghosh's resignation following fierce protests.
